Radio Mak, a Wa based radio station, has been recognised by the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) for its dedication to the coverage of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities in the region.
The station was presented with a citation at a ceremony in Wa on Monday at a ceremony to launch the Upper West Regional Open Defecation Free (ODF) League Table on the theme: “Achieving district wide Open Defecation Free, the role of MMDA leadership”.
The News Editor for Radio Mak, Philip Tengzu was also awarded with a citation as the best WASH reporter.
Radio Mak had been one of the radio stations in the Upper West Region that had devoted its time and resources to champion the advocacy against ill sanitation practices in the region and the country at large.
In a speech on his behalf at the event, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, reiterated the inalienable role of the media in national development including the campaign towards eradicating Open Defecation and other sanitation related hazards.
“I will therefore use this opportunity to call on all media to highlight on the problem of poor sanitation. The media must make this as a challenge and social responsibility to the region and the nation at large.
Defecating in a household toilet provides privacy, safety, comfort cleanliness and respect for the family. All landlords in the region and the general public are encouraged to construct and use household toilets and stop the practice of open defecation”, Dr Bin Salih stated.
Some deserving districts and municipalities in the region were also recognised and awarded with citations for their tremendous contribution to the success of the ODF campaign.
