Pigbengben community honoured for attaining ODF status

Pigbengben community in the Vieri Electoral Area, Wa West District, Upper West Region, has been honoured with a citation for reaching an Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
Receiving the citation from the Wa West District Assembly on behalf of the community at a ceremony in Pigbengben to celebrate the ODF status of the community, Mr. Ankah Yakubu, the Community Leader, assured stakeholders of their resolve to attain sanitised ODF status.
The community of about 700 residents embraced the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) concept since 2014 and constructed household toilets in each of the houses.
Madam Yakubu Nafisa, a resident of the community who shared her testimony of owing a household toilet noted that the rate of sanitation related diseases such as cholera was a thing of the past in the community.
“When there were no toilets we were suffering, but now we are free. It was a shame on us anytime we went to the bush to free ourselves.
Sometimes snakes bite us in the bush which was a very worrying situation for us, also now we even if it is raining we can still go to toilet and be save, we will no more walk in the rain to go to the bush to free ourselves”, she recounted.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Alhassan Inussah Agambire, the Upper West Regional Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Environmental Health and Sanitation Department, commended the community for the achievement and urged other communities to emulate.
He assured the Pigbengben community that his department would not hesitate to extend other development initiative to the community whenever it is available.
Mr. Jamil Wuni Iddi, a representative from the Wa West District Environmental Health and Sanitation Department, explained that the Wa West District was aimed at being the first district in the region to celebrate sanitized ODF status.
He therefore said the district was ready to support any community in its quest to eradicate Open Defecation.
For his part, Joseph Dari Yaaweh, the Assembly Member for the Vieri Electoral Area, noted that the success of Pigbengben was a success of his Electoral Area.
He appealed to the environmental health officers to give him the needed technical support to help him ensure that the whole Electoral Area became ODF.
Other community members, including Vieri and Chocho who were present at the event also expressed their commitment to ensure that their communities became ODF.
